Two volumes bound as one. With two beautiful copperplate frontispieces engraved by J.J. Wolff after designs by P. Decker, featuring an allegorical representation of the Old and New Testament, woodcut headpieces, initials, and a vignette at the center of the first title page. A solid and elegant contemporary full stiff vellum binding, spine with raised bands, and boards decorated with gilt fillets and a central coat of arms.
This is an esteemed 18th-century edition of the renowned translation by Giovanni Diodati, which first appeared in 1607. It is considered the first Italian translation based solely on original texts. This translation, which also includes the Apocryphal writings, was for centuries regarded as the definitive version for Italian Protestants. Following this edition, further revisions of Diodati’s Bible appeared in Leipzig in 1744, edited by J.D. Muller, and in 1819 by J.B. Roland. Rare, particularly in such a state of preservation and with a fine binding like this example.
