An Italian veneered bureau cabinet in walnut wood and burl, guitar-shaped top with clock created by the watchmaker Mauro Sabbatini, who was active in Modena during the 1700s.
This bureau cabinet is beautifully crafted with undulating fronts and sides, entirely made of wood and walnut burl, supported by curved legs. The top section is a guitar-shaped, carved wooden structure veneered with flamed walnut, containing a clock mechanism signed and dated "Mauro Sabbatini Modena, 1766." Inside the mechanism, which has six movements and a double chime, both the signature and date are engraved.
The large dial is made of maiolica, and the cartouche within it bears the inscription "Mauro Sabbatini Modena." It includes four smaller dials for the hours, seconds, months, days of the month, constellations, and days of the week.
The cabinet is adorned with three gilded paper-mâché sculptures depicting classical figures playing musical instruments.
Mauro Sabbatini, born in 1733 and residing at Via Stella 8 in Modena, was the Ducal clockmaker until 1794.
